Ive always loved just being out in the elements - wind, snow, heat, rain, bugs- and my love of painting has grown out of that passion. I feel that the landscape painter is one step closer to capturing the moment of his subject if he has a strong relationship with his environment. By embracing what ever Mother Nature dishes out with humility and grace, the painter becomes closer to that experience and can better tell the story of that particular day or scene. After a number of years, all of those experiences store up and go into his paintings and he gets closer to telling a story that has passion and feeling. I believe that great paintings are based in humility. How can a painter capture the essence of a feeling or a scene by putting himself first and the subject second? The great painter opens the door to his painting with a bow saying to the viewer, After you, and the viewer is greeted by the artists passions and feelings. I also think that great paintings reveal emotion before technique. Technique should be the slave to the greater idea or emotion. Look at Van Gogh, his paintings have a distinct technique to them but its the powerful emotions that you see first. The idea of capturing a particular moment and finding the greater truths in nature are what move me to paint. Painting has become an extension to my experiencing the outdoors and I will no longer pass through her wide eyed and wondering but sit and really see what makes nature so beautiful.Education St. John's University, Collegeville, MN Minnesota River School of Fine Arts, Burnsville, MN Hurinenko and Paquet Studio, St. Paul, MN Solo Exhibitions 2005 North by East, Vern Carver and Beard Art Galleries, Minneapolis, MN 2004 Exploring Curiosity, College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN
