Alice Elizabeth Hugy (1876-1971)

St. Paul, Minnesota artist Alice Hugy was born in Switzerland on January 2, 1876.  Hugy emigrated to the United States in 1882 and later began her training at St. Paul's School of Fine Arts.  She traveled to New York City for further study and spent five years there before returning to St. Paul.  Hugy painted for WPA projects and belonged to many local art societies.  She was a successful commercial artist, taught, and established St. Paul's first art gallery.  Hugy died in St. Paul on November 24, 1971.
