Samuel Chatwood Burton (1881-1947)

Samuel Chatwood Burton was an accomplished artist, writer, and teacher.  Born on February 18, 1881 in England, Burton spent three years studying at the Acedemie Julian in Paris and the Royal Academy in London.  In 1912 he emigrated to the United States, but made several return trips to Europe, most notably to prepare work for Spain Poised, a book burton wrote and illustrated with his etchings.  In 1915 Burton joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota and was Professor of Architecture and Fine Arts.  Burton continued to teach there the rest of his life.  Burton had been suffering from depression, and took his own life on March 4, 1947.
